Satellite imagery analysis is used to update the geographic distribution of the population, and to identify areas of change in the level of urbanization.

As shown in the three maps of townships in the Nanchang, Jiangxi area, the average night time lights intensity has increased between 2000 and 2007 in some townships. This increase is used as an indicator of population density increase and new urbanization.
